Red Sea port and gateway for Umrah, with a historic coral stone old town and a long corniche.
Jeddah has welcomed pilgrims for centuries and is the main arrival point for Umrah travellers heading to Makkah. King Abdulaziz International Airport handles most flights, and the Haramain high speed railway links Jeddah with Makkah and Madinah.
The old town, Al Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of coral stone houses with carved wooden balconies. Along the sea, the corniche runs for miles past parks, sculptures and King Fahd's Fountain, which shoots water high over the Red Sea.
The Red Sea reefs off Jeddah are popular for diving and snorkelling. November to February brings the most comfortable temperatures.
Entry rules depend on your passport and why you are travelling, so check the official sources below before you book. As of 21 October 2026, the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, including Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border: read its advice before you book.
